Labour and Plaid Cymru ran Wales pretty successfully for three years (2021-24) without a formal coalition. Could Swinney and Sarwar take a leaf out of the same boat?
The real Snp, under the late Alex Salmond, managed to work with the tories to pass budgets that drove forward competence, professionalism and progress. With labour, the Bain Principle was, and is, too strong to work with. The 'lost decade', post Salmond, will soon be fully realised in our freeports, and everywhere north of Stirling either being fracked, a windfarm, or a Scrooge McDuck theme park.
Good piece, David, and it may well be time now to prepare for a 'progressive coalition' between Labour and Plaid Cymru as Reform UK declares itself the 'official opposition' looking ahead to the 2026 elections to the Welsh Senned. Reform did remarkably well in South Wales in the last UK genera election. The makes John Osmond's book, The Politics of Co-Opposition (Welsh Academic Press) extremely timely.
